It was settled as early as the Bronze Age and includes remnants of medieval field systems, a Tudor deer park, early 18th-century Baroque water gardens, and WWII military camps.

Its distinctly rural feel can be a tranquil escape from the noise of the city. The park has a mixture of wooded areas, gardens, ponds, and grasslands where plenty of wildlife can be seen.
